Movement
The Benefits
The experience and benefits of massage are diverse and are usually encountered in a passive way, allowing the tissue to react to the work of a massage practitioner. The role of exercise in healing and wellness targets the nervous system to create and remember the balance and benefits on its own. I am a firm believer that active movement, experienced in a diverse and regular way, is the biggest key to structural health. Movement has many of the same benefits of massage and more. For example, when the body contracts a muscle, blood is circulated in and out of an area, bones become stronger, and space is made in-between tissue for the rest of you to function properly. Utilizing massage and movement together to gain and maintain balance is what I always recommend.
The Technique
I offer movement therapy as an adjunct to your massage treatment. Many times, I see folks in discomfort from repetitive movement patterns. Overuse syndromes and repetitive movements are one of the main causes of bad posture and structural discomfort. Assessing posture, understanding what mechanisms are in place that have potentially caused these unwanted patterns or injuries, and carefully re-training the nervous system, through movement, to find structural balance can be a more permanent solution to structural discomfort than massage alone.
In my movement treatment I integrate ease and strength, structural education, and mindful movement in order to ensure safety, correct alignment, and efficient neurological integration. Mindless movement only goes so far. Relating to movement through visualization techniques, metaphor, breath, and feeling has proven to be more effective in creating change.
